The “Next-Generation Safe School Bus” (Smart School Bus) project is a collaboration between the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (MDES) and the Digital Economy Promotion Agency (depa). The project aims to enhance student transportation safety through the use of digital technology.
In its first phase (August 2022 – July 2023), the system was installed in 3,500 school buses, covering 379 schools across 69 provinces nationwide. More than 35,000 students have directly benefited from this initiative.
A key highlight of the project is the integration of GPS and artificial intelligence (AI) technology to monitor both vehicles and students. It includes real-time processing of driving behavior, speed, and student status. The collected data is transmitted to a mobile application for parents and a web-based dashboard for schools, allowing them to promptly respond to emergencies and prevent potential accidents.
The project also includes plans to expand to additional schools across the country, aiming to raise the national standard for student transportation safety and to promote the adoption of digital technology within Thailand’s education sector.
